What is Epsom salt?
Epsom salt magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral salt, which is a compound of magnesium and sulfate in rock-like formations. Although it resembles table salt, it has a very bitter taste and is not meant to be eaten. Most people who use these salts dissolve it in a warm bath for a relieving soak to help with destressing and soothing sore muscles. Epsom salts have been claimed as a source of magnesium, which is obtained in small quantities, not enough for the body. Low magnesium levels may affect sleep quality and stress in a negative way. Epsom salt baths might reverse these issues by allowing your body to absorb magnesium through the skin.
The Benefits of Epsom Salt
Magnesium is often used to treat constipation. Magnesium is often taken orally for constipation relief in the form of magnesium citrate or magnesium hydroxide. However, although not well studied, consuming Epsom salt magnesium is also said to be effective to relieve constipation. Nevertheless, the FDA lists it as an approved laxative. There are also claims that taking salt baths can reduce muscle soreness and relieve cramps, which is ideal for athletes and those who are physically active every day. These claims began because adequate magnesium levels are helpful during exercise and physical activity as magnesium helps your body use glucose and lactic acid.
Salt Your Garden
Epsom salt has been used in gardening for a long period of time, so this is not a new concept. Epsom salt is known to improve flower blooms and enhances a plant's green color. It has even been known to promote growth, making a plant fuller. This is because Epsom salt is made up of hydrated magnesium sulfate that enables a plant to grow healthy and strong. Epsom salt can be dissolved in water and added to plants once or twice a month. Dissolving these salts in water enables the plants to absorb them quickly. So, whether you're taking a salt bath or using it for gardening, this salt is effective and useful.
